Sod Installation in Houston, TX

Quick answer

Sod is the usual way to establish St. Augustine and zoysia in Houston. Remove old turf, fix low spots, loosen the clay and lay sod the day it arrives. Warm-season sod roots best from spring into early fall. Check your city or MUD watering rules before a summer install, since new sod needs frequent water at first.

Sod is how most Houston lawns get started. St. Augustine, the most common grass in the area, is established from sod rather than seed, and zoysia is usually installed the same way. Whether you are replacing a lawn lost to disease, fixing bare spots under a tree, or converting to a different grass, the results depend more on soil preparation and timing than on the sod itself.

Choose the right grass for the spot

Texas A&M AgriLife lists St. Augustine as best adapted to Southeast Texas and the most shade tolerant of the warm-season grasses, though it still needs several hours of sun and does not hold up well to heavy traffic. Bermuda needs full sun and handles wear. Zoysia offers moderate shade tolerance and a dense lawn. Matching the grass to sun and use matters more than any brand name. Our guide to the best grass for Houston lawns covers the trade-offs.

How a sod installation should go

  1. Find the cause. If the old lawn died, figure out why. Shade, standing water, disease or insects will kill new sod too if they are not addressed.
  2. Remove the old turf and weeds. Laying sod on top of old grass leads to poor root contact and patchy results.
  3. Fix the grade. Houston yards are flat, so even small low spots hold water. Soil should slope away from the house, and low areas should be filled before sod goes down.
  4. Prepare the soil. Loosen compacted clay and add a thin layer of quality soil or compost where needed. Many installers spread a few inches of sandy loam or a soil blend over the clay so new roots have an easier start.
  5. Lay sod promptly. Sod should go down the day it is delivered, with seams tight and staggered like brickwork.
  6. Roll and water. Roll for good soil contact, then water right away.

Timing in Houston

Warm-season sod roots best when it is actively growing, generally from spring into early fall. Mid-summer installs work but need careful watering in the heat. Sod laid in the cooler months can survive, but it roots slowly until spring. Avoid laying sod just before a hard freeze.

Watering new sod and local rules

New sod needs frequent, light watering at first, then deeper, less frequent watering as roots grow. That can run into local drought restrictions, which in the Houston area are set by each city, MUD or water authority. Many drought plans include a limited exception for new landscapes, but the details vary and can change with each drought stage. Check with your water provider before scheduling a summer install. Our guide to Houston-area watering rules explains how to find yours.

What affects the cost

Sod pricing depends on the grass type and variety, the size of the area, how much old turf and debris must be hauled away, how much grading and soil is needed, access for pallets and equipment, and whether irrigation needs to be adjusted. A cheap bid that skips soil prep often costs more later. Compare itemized estimates.

Questions to ask a sod installer

  • What variety of grass will you install, and why for this spot?
  • How will you remove the old lawn and fix low areas?
  • Is there a guarantee, and what watering is required to keep it valid?
  • Will you adjust sprinkler heads after the new lawn is down?

Frequently asked questions

Can St. Augustine be grown from seed?

Not practically. St. Augustine is established from sod, plugs or sprigs. Bermuda can be seeded, and zoysia is usually installed as sod.

Can I water new sod during drought restrictions?

Many drought plans in the region include a limited exception for new landscapes, but the details vary by city, MUD and drought stage. Confirm with your water provider before installing.

Why did my new sod die in low spots?

Sod sitting in water after heavy rain can rot, especially on clay. Fixing the grade before installing is the best prevention.
